General English

Our society is inundated with data: it is all around us everywhere you look. The news, businesses, and the government all use data to make critical decisions, but how do you know the data is reliable? Are the statistics produced being accurately represented? It has been said that “statistical thinking will one day be as necessary for efficient citizenship as the ability to read and write” and certainly we can see that coming to fruition. This Intro to Statistics class will help students to think critically to discern truth from data.

This Intro to Statistics class is all inclusive appealing to differing levels of mathematical ability. The goals of this class are to understand how data are produced, organized, and interpreted. Direct applications will be made to various fields of study.

General English

General English is a 4-day/week bridge course that presents a review of the basic concepts of grammar, literature, and writing in preparation for high school English I. Instruction in grammar covers parts of speech, sentence structure, capitalization, punctuation, phrases, clauses, word usage, and more. Literature begins with figurative language and then progresses through poetry, short stories, and novels by chiefly American and European poets and authors. Writing initially includes practicing grammar skills and then developing those skills in response to literature, ranging from sentences, to paragraphs, to essays, and a research paper.

No textbooks need to be purchased for this course. All content will be provided in the Canvas classroom.
