Consumer Math

Making mathematics relevant to daily life, this course illustrates how financial concepts relate to everyday lives. The American free-enterprise system is portrayed in a positive light as the student studies such topics as personal budgeting, banking, investing, keeping tax records, and purchasing necessities.

More specifically, students will discover the many costs involved to owning a vehicle and home, going on a vacation, and budgeting for food, clothing, and housing expenses. Students will learn how to maintain bank records, calculate income & property taxes, and in April they will generate multiple tax returns. This excellent real-world math course will show students how to budget their finances for the life beyond their childhood. Students from past years have shared these comments in class: “Wow, I didn’t know xxxxx was that expensive!” “Now I understand why Mom/Dad say no to #eating out, #shopping, #vacations...!” “It’s good to have a plan.”
